International Season 1984/85, Part 8


May
The World Cup 1986 qualifiers continued with Belgium defeating Poland.
Bulgaria defeated France in Sofia. This was France’s first defeat in 15 matches.

Brazil defeated Uruguay and Argentina in friendlies. They then lost friendlies to Colombia and Chile.
Evaristo was fired after the loss vs. Chile.
USSR won its first qualifier vs. Switzerland.
Denmark defeated East Germany in friendly. This marked Alan Simonsen’s comeback for Denmark after the serious injury suffered at Euro 84.
Holland defeated the already qualified Hungary at Budpaest, to claim the second spot in the Group and earn a play-off spot at the end of the year.

East Germany defeated Luxembourg in a qualifier that marked Hans-Jurgen Doerner’s 100th cap for East Germany.
Argentina (including Maradona and Passarella) started its World cup qualifiers.
Spain tied the Republic of Irelans in a friendly with Andoni Zubizaretta firmly established as Spain’s starting goalkeeper. He would remain in that position for over a decade.
Following the dissolution of the Home Championship, England and Scotland maintained their annual meetings with the inaugural ‘Rous Cup’.
Scotland wore for the first time their shorts with blue strip across.
Zbigniew Boniek appeared (and scored) for Poland in their qualifier va. Albania, just the day after the ill-fated Champiosn Cup Final at Heysel.
