Qualification Phase, Part Three (Norway 1994 World Cup Qualifiers)

Norway started the qualification phase of the 1994 World Cup as an underdog in a Group that was seen as a formality for powers such as Holland and England.
Former radical student activist Egil Olsen had been in charge of Norway since October 1990. It was too late to make an impact in the 1992 Euro qualifiers, but they had surprised the continent by defeating Italy at Oslo in June 1991 (2-1 win). Many viewed that match as a reference point for this generation of Norwegian players who would qualify for the main event for the first time since 1938.
Initially the player pool contained only a handful of players with experience in the Western European Leagues. These included veteran center back and Captain Rune Bratseth of Werder Bremen and Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Erik Thorstvedt.
However, many would go on and join the burgeoning English Premier League due to their performances in these qualifiers.
In addition to Holland and England, the group also contained Poland, Turkey and San Marino.
Norway kicked off the qualifiers on September 9th vs. no hopers San Marino. While San Marino was regarded as the weakest team in the Group (perhaps all of Europe), no one could have predicted that Norway would have won with the unbelievable score of 10-0. No one was naïve enough to emphasize the win, however, the number of goals showed a determination early on that the squad was ready to make an impact.

They did just that two weeks later at home vs. Holland.
Many had expected Holland to at the worse come up with a tie and leave satisfied with a point in their pocket. They were met with another determined performance from Norway that had come out playing and wanting to win.
After going ahead through a Rekdal spot kick, the Dutch had immediately equalized through Bergkamp. This was the extent of their resistance and Norway scored the deserved winner in the 78th minute through Goran Sørloth.

On October 7th, they met San Marino again, this time away. Another (10-0) drubbing was highly unlikely and Norway did the minimum and scored two early goals for a (2-0) scoreline.

A week later, they had their sternest test of the qualifiers. England hosted the surprising Norwegians at Wembley. The English were determined and had Paul Gascoigne back in the lineup for the first time since his serious injury the previous year.
They applied most of the pressure and it was no surprise when David Platt gave them the lead in the second half.

The match seemed to be headed for a predictable English win, when with less than quarter an hour left, Rekdal unleashed a shot from long distance beyond the reach of Chris Woods. The score remained unchanged and Norway came away with an important point that was seemingly lost. This result furthered their belief that they could actually qualify and did not need to fear anyone.

Norway’s next match was some six months later in late April 1993.
They comfortably defeated Turkey at Oslo (3-1) to further consolidate their position at the top, while on the same day Holland drew with England at Wembley (2-2).

The question now wasn’t whether Norway would qualify, but which one of the remaining key rivals in the Group would be joining them.
In early June, Norway further underlined their leader status by earning key results against their main rivals in the space of a week.
On June 2nd in Oslo, Norway defeated the English (2-0) to further complicate England’s chances.

The following week in Rotterdam, Norway held Holland scoreless. Norway had gone to Holland with the specific purpose of gaining a point and that is just what they earned, despite Holland’s domination.

When Fall 1993, qualification seemed right around the corner with a double header with Poland.
On September 22nd, Norway defeated Poland narrowly (1-0) through a Jostein Flo goal to almost qualify. The only blemish was the sending off of goalkeeper Erik Thorstvedt, who was penalized for foul as the last man on Poland’s Roman Kosecki.

This gave an opportunity for Frode Grodaas to start in the net for the return fixture in Poland on October 13th
Thorstvedt was hardly missed as Norway comprehensively defeated Poland away (3-0) and outright qualified for the World Cup.

On the same night, Holland defeated England (2-0) under controversial circumstances to be the odds on favorites for the second spot.
For its match on November in Turkey, Norway took the foot off the pedal and lost (1-2) in an inconsequential match.
Holland defeated Poland and joined Norway for the World Cup.
Norway went to the World Cup, but were eliminated in the first round. Despite defeating Mexico (1-0) in the first match, they lost by the same score vs. Italy and scoreless tie with the Republic of Ireland eliminated them.
Overall, the mood was positive due to the surprise qualification.
This generation was perhaps Norway’s best in the modern era and they qualified for the 1998 edition as well.
